feedback from our guests we have decided to share these comments with you. Therefore, on this page you’ll find ALL the comments we have received. These have been copied verbatim from our guest books. Nothing has been left out. If you don’t believe us, you’ll have to come and check for yourself!!
L’Athena Guest Feedback October 2004 – Present Day21st August - 3rd September 2010 Thank you so much for sharing your home with us - we've had a fantastic, relaxing time - and the children have really enjoyed themselves. Weather has been great, entertainment brilliant and the pool superb. Endless evening cricket, frisbee and snail house building - what can we say! All the very best Dave, Claire, Thomas & Ellie (Shrewsbury) 31st July - 14th August 2010 To Nicki, Paul, Georgina, Claudia & zinzi THANKS GUYS ..... for yet another wonderful holiday - where does the time go? 2 weeks just isn't enough. The welcome BBQ was a great start to the holiday & seems so long ago. We've done so much: horse riding 3 times, Saintes market, Vallée de Singes (ask for a family tarif if you have lots of children). The brocantes were good, fun but not big, 9am arrival was OK. We loved the heated pool - great to relax in after a days sightseeing. The weathers been lovely, not too hot, but didn't need the wetsuits either - just perfect. We're going to miss you so much that we're going to have to book for October & next summer !! The Sharpe family (Harrogate) Coming again next year for the 6th year running!
17th - 24th July 2010 To Nicky, Paul, Georgina & Claudia Thank you all so much for making our holiday really special. You have been fantastic hosts and the boys have fallen in love with the girls resulting in a marriage proposal from Matthew (4). Thanks again, we hope to come back one day. Love Mark, Mandy, Aaron & Matthew (Watters family, Cumbria) 3rd - 17th July 2010 Paul, Nicky, Georgina & Claudia Have had a lovely relaxing break in this part of France. Fab weather and other guests helped kids really enjoy 1st week. Found 2nd week very quiet which was great for us parents but the kids missed the company. Pool lovely and have managed a swim every day but one. Saintes definately worth a visit. Great 'traiteur' in Surgeres - 'Patrice et Nadine Girard' & lovely meals in Le Bon Etape in Dampierre. Dampierre castle & grounds well worth a visit - kids had great time in the gardens. Horse riding brilliant for Elena. Henry, Carol Ann, Elena & Dennis (Sheehy family, Tipperary, Ireland) ps. To Georgina & Claudia - I have had a great time playing with you. Zinzi was the best. Hope to see you soon. Elena 26th June - 3rd July 2010 Thanks for a lovely week. We have had great weather and the children have loved the pool and playing with 'the big children'. The boats at Marais Poitevin were a big hit as was the market at Jean D'Angely. Thanks also for being so hospitable and plying us with wine and telling us your experiences with restoration and the locals! Only wish we had booked 2 weeks instead of one, and think there will be tears when we leave. Claudia & Georgina have been great with Arthur and Flossie. Hope to see you again in the future. Clare, Brian, Arthur & Flossie (The Rainey Family, Brighton) ps. Would also recommend le Grand Plage on Ile D'Oleron
19th - 26th June 2010 Thank you for all your helpfulness in our first visit to this part of France and your lovely gite. The weather has been wonderful and we have been able to tour the area. Would recommend Saintes, Oleron, Coulon & La Rochelle. Well equipped gite & very comfortable bed - we slept like logs & woke later each morning than we intended! Local supermarket is excellent & their petrol a very good price. All in all a great way to celebrate our Ruby wedding. Our only regret that we didn't get round to trying out your lovely pool. Thanks for a super holiday. David & Margaret Barter (Reading)
7th November 2009 - 14th March 2010 Having decided to spend the winter in France we came to L'Athena not knowing what to expect. Following a warm welcome on arrival late on a dark evening we settled in and found ourselves to be comfortable and very quickly relaxed into a leisurely routine. The gite has everything needed to live comfortably and snugly. The woodburner has been excellent and has kept the gite really warm despite some really cold weather at times including snow!! There is always plenty of hot water available and what with UK TV and broadband access, all essentials are available. Then of course there were Nicki, Paul and the girls who really 'went the extra mile' to make us 'feel at home' without at any time being intrusive. Add to that zinzi, the cats and 'my friends' the chickens and we can truly say that we have had a great and enjoyable relaxed winter in France. Thank you all for a great time. We may well be back next year all being well. Phil & Rose Collings
15th - 30th August 2009 It is hard to put into words the gratitude I must express to Nicki and Paul for all they have done for us over the course of this holiday. My circumstances were unusual, in that my wife left me a couple of weeks before we came. I was determined that the kids would still have the best possible holiday and they certainly have. Thanks to Nicki and Paul, I was also able to relax and enjoy my holiday at a time when I needed one more than I ever have before in my life. The help offered by Nicki and Paul was always available, but never instrusive, always supportive, but never smothering. From covering the kids with sun cream while I was keeping the gite tidy, to lending camping gear for a little excursion, they have been brilliant throughout. As a result, I leave feeling 10 times better than when I arrived and the kids just don't want to leave. I have stayed in other gites that have been the subject of huge investment, and run by large companies, and while they might have looked more sparkly, they could come close to offering the warmth of welcome we have enjoyed here. I must mention our best days out - the boating lake at St. Savinien (twice) and the Nautilis water park at Angoulême, but nowhere has been better than 'Le Repos des Hiboux'. To Nicki, Paul, Georgina, Claudia and everyone else, from the bottom of our hearts THANK YOU ! Paul, Lily & Edward Green (Somerset)
8th August - 15th August 2009 Thank you for the wonderfully warm welcome - we especially enjoyed the BBQ, a great way to break the ice with the other guests and ensured plenty of chatter around the pool. The gite is extremely comfortable and equipped with everything we needed. Even though the weather has been glorious we did manage a trip to La Rochelle (worth visiting), the Chateau at Dampierre (worth visiting) and the evening market at Surgeres (very enterterning!). The pool is fab and warm - even I got in within 30 seconds!! and the star gazing nights are recommended - shooting stars galore! Thank you Louisa, Charlotte & Wendy (Derbyshire)
25th - 7th August 2009 Thank you all for yet another wonderful time. We're going home to detox - well - after we've finished what we've bought! Looking forward to seeing you in October and next summer - only 351 sleeps to go! Lovin' the heated pool & all our lovely evenings & days out. Take care, lots of love from Chris, Heidi, Rebecca & Katy (The Sharpes from Harrogate) Rebooked for October 2009 & August 2010 - for the 5th year running!
4th - 17th July 2009 Dear Nicole & Paul, Georgina & Claudia We are proud to be the first Dutch who visited your 'estate', the exponent of your new 'French' life. You have created an atmosphere of warmth and kindess and shown great hospitality. We wish you all many healthy and happy years on your 'Domaine' and wish that business will flourish. Suggestions: La Rochelle, Royan, Coulon. The Auberge des Voyageurs, Beauvoir Never worry, be Happy !! Annelis & Jan (Rotterdam, The Netherlands)
13th - 20th June 2009 What a lovely warm welcome from Paul, Nicky and the girls, who provide everything you could want, more noticeably for families. However, for us arriving as pensioners, me just having broken a bone in my foot ("done a Beckham") and on crutches - so kind allowing us to drive straight to the door of our gite - and also driving from "home" to the pool! (only 25 meters away). I managed to hop/shuffle to the roman end and lower myself into the gorgeous pool - heaven!! We had a great find in the Domaine de Rennebourg (10 minutes towards St Jean D'Angely) for an evening meal. Michele & Florence, mother & daughter who have renovated a most beautiful old french 1600s house plus beautiful garden..... I'm sure you would enjoy the experience - truly old France. They even have a museam she's keen to show you. A great holiday, thanks! Liz & Andy Cole (Devon)
30th May - 6 June 2009 Nicky, Paul, Georgina & Claudia Thank you for being so hospitable and welcoming hosts. We have had a very relaxing week, which is quite a mean feet with a two year old in toe!! The highlights of our week have been the trips to the beaches on Ile de Ré and Ile D'Oleron where Matthew and Daddy built many sandcastles. Matthew has also loved playing in the house under the tree and on the slide. Thank you again for a lovely venue for our holiday and for all your advice and tips. From Nicky, Will & Matthew Thomas (from Pill, North Somerset)
26th November 2008 - 24th April 2009 Long term rental Tamara & Perrie Hulett (Now living in France)
12th October - 26th October 2008 Fantastic time yet again! Hospitality makes the stay feel like home from home. The chit chat with the girls was lovely - they are a credit to you and themselves. At last we have got our dream house in France. Thanks again for your support and advice and we look forward to seeing you soon. La Rochelle on a beautiful sunny sunday morning having a coffee looking over the marina was great. The oysters and other produce from St Jean market were fantastic. The weather was great in the late 20's with clear skies and chilly first thing. See you in the New Year and thanks for the key holding and help with the Devis. Jeanette & Steve Wilding xx (Wolverhampton)
23rd August - 30 August 2008 Thank you again for a super holiday. It was great to see you all your family again and enjoyed Claudia's and your Dad's birthday party's. Talk about mixed emotions!! Wayne thoroughly enjoyed the karting and will try to cram in some practice for next year!! At least he was 'King of the bouncy chateau 4-way dash!!' Anyway must sadly be on our way. Look forward to seeing you next year! Lots of love & hugs Wayne, Zoe, Skye & Poppy Law (Huntingdon)
9th August - 23rd August 2008 Dear Nicky, Paul, Georgina & Claudia We have had a good holiday despite the very mixed weather. The chateau at Dampierre is well worth a visit, the wildlife garden was fantastic, loads of dragonflies and damsel flies to observe. The gites are looking great and we can see the changes since our visit 2 years ago. Thank you for your hospitality and friendly advice. Ros, Tim, Simon & Nick Jarvis Burton-on-Trent, Staffs
26th July - 9th August 2008 Thank you all for yet another wonderful holiday. We don't want to go home, but can't face the disappointment for the next guests bout to arrive .... so, very reluctantly ..... we'll be out for 10.01!! The best giggle was watching an empty canoe go down river as we chatted on the shore! The best laugh ... Paul ironing .... it's always the simple things in life! We're so going to miss you - good job we've booked for October and next August!! Chris, Heidi, Rebecca & Katy xxxx (Harrogate) Rebooked October 2008 & August 2009
12th-26th July 2008 Dear Nicki, Paul & Girls Thank you so much for yet another lovely holiday. The weather & company have been superb. We have had a fantastic time in your wonderful accommodation. We look forward to seeing you all next summer as we have rebooked! Love to you all Ali, Paul, Lily & Ed Green xxxx (Somerset) ps. The girls are a credit to you both! Rebooked August 2009
21st - 28th June 2008 To the Allington Clan Thanks for making us very welcome and for all your helpful advice for our house hunting - we now wish we had stayed for 2 weeks in the region as we loved it. Our top 3 places to go (with limited sight seeing time) - Ile de Ré, St Jean D'Angely (market days Sat & Wed), the Marais Poitevin canals. We are sure that your success will continue as you are great hosts. Many thanks. Jeanette & Steve Wilding (Wolverhampton) Ps. Thanks also to Annie & Dave for their advice. PPs. Thanks for the loan of the wellies - bit hot in 30 degrees but kept the mosquitos out.
7th - 21st June 2008 Dear Nicky, Paul, Georgina & Claudia Thank you for a great holiday and your help and advice with places to go. Our top 3 places to visit are the Ile de Ré, the beaches are beautiful and there are some really nice restaurants; Vallees de Singes - Valley of the monkeys, you get to walk through the monkey enclosures and they come right up to you; and Les Antilles, the aqua park at Jonzac has really nice outdoor & indoor facilities. We also enjoyed Cognac, Saintes, Niort and the fresh market at St Jean D'Angely. We enjoyed the bike ride and the outdoor and indoor games, and we hope to be back next year with our baby. Thanks again. Rachel and James Joiner (Edinburgh)
2nd May - 6th June 2008 Dear Nicola, Paul & the girls Thank you very much for all your help and good advice. It's been a trying time for us waiting for our furniture to arrive from South Africa and having to travel to our house in St Hilaire de Villefranche almost every day. The dogs have been an absolute nuisance and we are sure you won't forget them (and the damage to the door). Sorry we couldn't make use of your pool as the weather wasn't good enough. Anyway, thanks again - we'll keep in touch. John & Doris (Tipsy & Rusty)
9th - 23rd April 2008 Thank you Nicky & Paul We had a lovely time, 2 wks early April. Weather mixed but lovely to have your warm and comfortable gite. Everything just right. All our best wishes to you and the girls. Elizabeth & Ken Frances (Bridlington)
27th October 2007 - 26th January 2008 Dear Nicki, Paul, Georgina & Claudia Thank you for an enjoyable stay in your gite and for all the help and advice you've given us. The gite has been comfortable and warm and the perfect base for house hunting. We've visited the area many times before, but have still enjoyed revisiting many places, including Saintes, La Rochelle, Niort, Ruffec and Civray. We recommend the beaches of St Georges, Didonne and Chatelaillon Plage, the monkey park 'Vallee des Singes' and the very moving Oradour-sur-Glane. We enjoyed visiting Aulnay market on sunday mornings and the christmas lights in St Jean D'Angely were beautiful. We'll miss you Paul, Nicki and your beautiful girls and hope that you'll visit us. Bren & Ken Holmes
20th October - 27th October 2007 Thank you all for another great holiday. You have been absolutely wonderful & we're going to miss being spoilt! Becky & Katy have really loved their morning bike rides & hot chocolate drinks. Hope to see you next August - if not before ..... ! Love & best wishes Chris, Heidi, Becky & Katy (Harrogate) Rebooked August 2008
29th September - 6th October 2007 Dear Nicky, Paul & gorgeous girls Thank you for making us feel so welcome in your beautiful french gite. We have had a lovely stay & hope to return soon. As always Cognac turned in a beautiful day and we were pleasantly surprised with La Rochelle's beauty. Also great to visit Matha & St Jean D'Angely. We love what you have done with the property all of your hard work & dedication has certainly paid off. Hopefully one day we may be able to return the hospitality if you again visit Sydney. Thanks again Fiona, Joe, Chloe & Matilde (Sydney, Australia) Chloé & Tily loved the 'park' backyard & all the great toys you had laid on for the visit. Thanks again
18th August - 1st September 2007 To Paul, Nicky, Georgina & Claudia Thank you for such a fantastic holiday. We have had such a good time that we have rebooked for next year. You are wonderful hosts, keep going with the restorations. Recommendations: The Chateau at Dampierre, excellent & beautiful. Cognac - The Hennessy tour was really interesting but buy your cognac from the bar up the road. Cheaper and much nicer. The Aquarium at La Rochelle was the best - get the tour tape and get there early! Love from Ali, Paul, Lily & Ed xxxx (Somerset) Rebooked July 2008
15th – 20th July
2007 Had a lovely time here. Very happy with the accommodation – all essentials taken care of and then some! Ventured to many local attractions. Highlights included cycling on Ile de Ré and a superb meal at Clos des Cours restaurant, beside the Theatre in Saintes. Hope to return Alison & Bryan (Fife, Scotland) 30th June – 14th
July 2007 Gite is ideal with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Lots of things to do and see including Jarnac, Ile de Ré, Fouras Beach, the zoo in Royan, La Rochelle’s Aquarium and Cognac. Weather has been ‘unseasonal’ !!!! but did not put us off, the area is beautiful. Paul, Nicky, Georgina, Claudia and Zinzi, what can we say?? Very accommodating and extremely hospitable which helped us thoroughly enjoy our holiday and once the pool is up to temperature it was great fun too. We are leaving with great memories this year. See you same time next year. Love David, Gillian, Sean & Lisa (West Lothian) Rebooked July 2008 23rd – 30th June
2007 Well, we made it back as promised! An up and down week for more reasons than one, not at least the unseasonal weather, but it didn’t put us off! Arrived with suitcases – left with (fingers crossed) a house!! Nice to see Paul & Nicky still hard at work (!) the girls having grown up and zinzi having grown taller! The petanque night will not be forgotten for a LONG time! Though some of it is rather blurry ……! Back again is Sept & can’t wait. Ian and Amanda Saha (Oldham) Rebooked September 2007 16th-23rd June
2007 Dear Nicky, Paul, Georgina & Claudia Thank you so much for a very relaxing week. We had everything we needed & more in the gite & we really enjoyed playing petanque & the fab BBQ. It was brilliant letting the boys out to play, knowing they were safe. They really loved the tractors ….. and the snails of course! The bike trailer was great fun too (just wish I could fit in it!) All your recommendations were spot on. Highlights for us were the aquarium & hiring a boat at La Garette (Marais Poitevin). Thanks again for making our holiday such a good one! Jessica, Darren, Jake and Max (Watlington, Oxford) 25th May – 4th
June 2007 Dear Nicky, Paul, Georgina & Claudia We have had a wonderful holiday, the Gite was lovely to stay in. Thank you for adding the stair gate, high chair, cot and toys for Jack, it made the stay so much more enjoyable. Charlotte has played and played with the girls outside and particularly enjoyed the bike rides and snail hunts. The meal on the first night was a delight. The highlights for us were the visits to Atlantys, Ile de Ré , the Aquarium and Marais Poitevin. Thanks once again, we’ll be back! Donna, Simon, Charlotte and Jack (Shropshire) Dear Georgina and Claudia I had a great time at futurescope and all the other great things we did particularly the movie night and soaking Nicky at futurescope. One of my best bits was playing with Samantha the snail! Charlotte (age 7)
5th – 19th May
2007 Dear Paul and Nicola We have had a wonderful twp weeks here in your lovely gite. Although the weather has been disappointing for this time of year , we have still had a great time! We have enjoyed visits to Cognac, La Rochelle, Ile de Ré, St Jean D’Angely, St- Savinien, Ile D’Oleron and Saintes. Thank you for making our stay so comfortable and being so attentive to all our needs. The childrens toys, cot, stair gates, high chairs, videos have all been very much appreciated. We loved being able to use the bikes to go on rides in the beautiful countryside, even the boys enjoyed it too in the end! We would love to come back again maybe in June or July when we will be able to use the pool more! Thanks again for all your efforts to make our holiday a success, and all the best for the rest of the restoration project! With love, Charlie, Sarah, Josh and Theo (London) 12th Jan – 4th
May 2007 Dear Paul and Nicky Thank you very much for the welcome you gave us and all your help and advice on our move to France. For other people thinking of staying in the region on a long term rental we wouldn’t hesitate in recommending your gite for it’s clean, bright and modern facilities. The wood burning stove was excellent and there was everything we needed for everyday living during a long stay. The ADSL internet connection available in the gite was an absolute boon. We were very grateful for the help you were willing to give with the language. Things like stepping in on difficult phone calls and help with filling in forms for banks, health and phone accounts was really useful as were your directions to the local and government services and advice on where the best shops could be found. We can also recommend the enclosed back garden on behalf on our two, rather shy, cats that had the opportunity to get settled in gently before going a bit further afield. Wishing you all the best for the future. Sarah & Ian Smith (Previously Lancashire, now France!) 21st – 28th
October 2006 Thank you – very relaxed, just what we hoped for. Lovely area – great gite! Good luck with the rest of your project. Thanks again Lesley & Peter Bayford (Lincolnshire) 14th – 21st
October 2006 Dear Paul, Nicola, Georgina and Claudia Back again, had a super week. Thanks for all your help, enjoyed our stay as much as last time, gite lovely and cosy for October. Your help in buying the barn much appreciated. Enjoyed visits to St Jean, Cognac, Rochefort – nice meal by marina at La Goule Benaise & interesting to see restoration of the clipper ‘Hermione’ (5€ adults, children under 8yrs free). Hope to see you in February Love Lynn, Ian and Jade x (Lancashire) Dear Georgina & Claudia I have had a great time playing horsey and in the buggy with you. Love you lots, U R my friends forever xxxxx Love from Jade (age 10yrs) Rebooked February 2007
20th – 27th
September 2006 Dear Nicola, Paul & Kids Thanks a million for every thing, we really enjoyed out holiday. Wish it was for longer. Next we’ll stay for 2 weeks. Kids really enjoyed the pool it was great. Thanks Nicola for everything and help with the doctor for the kids. You’re very kind. Thanks again for everything. Richard, Susan, Cole, Ricky and Oliver (County Cork) 9th – 16th
September 2006 We have had a wonderful relaxing week, exactly what we were hoping for. Thank you so much for making us so welcome. The gite is lovely ( you really have thought of everything), and of course thoroughly enjoyed the pool. What a shame that the rain kept us out of the water during the last few days of our holiday. Louis has particularly enjoyed playing with Georgina & Claudia, and has waited anxiously for the school bus to arrive every afternoon! (next time, we must visit during the school holidays)! We haven’t ventured too far this time, but your recommendations of local places to visit were much appreciated. We particularly enjoyed our afternoon at Fouras and even though the weather could have been better, we still went for ice cream in a beach front café. The chateau at Dampierre is well worth a visit, and we enjoyed exploring the nearby towns of St Jean D’Angely and Surgeres. There is obviously so much more to see and do in the area – we will have to return. We wish you all the very bext as you continue your renovation project, and look forward to seeing you again. You really have chosen a lovely pot to relocate your family. A bientot. Mike, Jo and Louis (Nottingham) 19th August – 2nd
September 2006 Nicky, Paul, Georgina & Claudia We’ve had a fabulous holiday staying in your great gite and getting to know all and the people in the other gite!! The welcome you extended to us was lovely, nothing has been too much trouble, Ian & I feel incredibly relaxed! The surrounding area has loads to offer families and we feel we haven’t even seen half of it. We particularly enjoyed Ile de Ré and Marais Poitevin. The little chateau down the road at Dampierre is a real find. Once again thank you so much and we looking forward to seeing you & our new friends next year!! Love Alison, Ian, Matt & Josh (Evesham) Rebooked for July 2007 5th - 19th August
2006 Nicky, Paul Georgina & Claudia Thank you for a lovely, relaxing holiday. We love the gite and the pool is fantastic. We really enjoyed the BBQ night and your hospitality. I’m afraid we didn’t de a lot (which is exactly what we intended) so can’t really recommend anywhere to visit! We did manage Dampierre though and thought it was beautiful, spent ages watching the fish in the river. Hopefully we will return again in the future. Our thanks and very best wishes. Ros, Tim, Simon & Jarvis (Staffordhsire) Rebooked for August 2008 22nd July – 5th
August 2006 By email Hi Nicola and Paul Hope you are all well and everything is going okay for you. I just wanted to say a big thank you to you for a really great holiday. It feels like we came and stay with friends and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We will have great memories of the pool, watching the children play on the swings, relaxed way of life, nice meals and the fun we had with all your family. We have some great pictures to remind us of all the good times. Monday morning was very hard indeed and Sara and myself felt really sad about not being on holiday, but now appear to be back into the full swing of things as normal life takes over once again. Our only regret was forgetting to sign your visitors book, but I am happy for you to make an entry under our name. Take care Chris, Sara, Wills & Tom (Cheltenham) 15th – 22nd July
2006 What a scorcher! We’re not sure when we last had 38° on the car thermometer for most of the week! Consequently we haven’t done a great deal – a daily moocj around local markets in St Jean D’Angely and Surgeres. Tom’s been practising his French on the local boulangeries but generally we have chilled out in your brilliantly equipped gite, watching you race about getting the next one ready. We wish you every success with it you are extremely thoughtful hosts – our 2 ½ yr old and six months lacked nothing for entertainment and the pool is a triumph – I can’t believe you built it Paul! Thanks too for the BBQ, your girls are delightful and it was lovely to get to know you all a little over a meal. Isla I know will talk about ‘Gina’ and ‘Cloudy’ for some time. All the best Tom, Tash, Isla and William McDonald (London) 8th – 15th July
2006 Thanks for lovely holiday, wonderful place, thanks so much for your hospitality. Would recommend a visit to Coulon & Ile de Ré esp. food at St Martin. Hopefully see you in October I enjoyed playing with Georgina and Claudia, Love Jade xx Love from Lynn, Ian and Jade (Lancashire) Rebooked for October 2006 1st – 8th July
2006 Hi
Paul, Nicola, Georgina & Claudia Thanks for a great relaxing holiday. Great memories to take back with us including the great and very variable weather. What a thunderstorm!! Hope your new property works out for you. Cheers Gordon, Michele, Kenneth & Lewis (Clackmannanshire) 24th June – 1st
July 2006 Dear All Regardless of the overcast weather we had a lovely time. Very relaxing, peaceful and quiet. Holly (4 yrs) would have spent everyday with Georgina and Claudia. Too many great places to list to visit but Chateau Dampierre was good for adults and kids. Good luck with the rest of your dream. Nigel, Mandy and Holly (Somerset) 17th - 24th June
2006 We have had a wonderful holiday. Thank you so much for a very relaxing holiday. The gite is very homely, you’ve certainly thought of everything! We will definitely be back (to ride on the big bike), and for the wonderful hospitality, and great BBQ nights. Thank you Georgina and Claudia for keeping Reece entertained. I’m sure he’ll be talking about for a very long time (till we return). Good luck with all your plans, can’t wait to see it again when it’s all complete, and if you ever find yourself up in Yorhsire, be sure to give us a bell. Jay, Lindsey, Reece and Macey (Harrogate) 10th – 17th June
2006 Fantastic holiday and gite that reinforced the fact that we HAVE to mover over here! Weather was fantastic – even the rain forecast for Friday! (it never arrived but the sun did!) La Rochelle & Rochefort are well worth a visit, as is Dampierre sur Boutonne – jus remember to take the car! Pool is fantastic and is warm. There’s a lot of ‘fantastics’ here – but the holiday was. Nicky, Paul, Georgina, Claudia & zinzi are a lovely family & made us fell really welcome. We wish them all the best & will be back to make sure the other gites are finished!! Ian & Amanda Saha (Oldham) Ps. Look out for the satellites at night! Rebooked for June 2007 21st – 28th May
2006 Dear Nicky, Paul, Georgina; Claudia & Zinzi Here I am again but with hubby & Caitlin this time. 1st of the Tuesday Group from England to visit as a family. It’s great to be able to bring them over and we have all enjoyed ourselves – will have to come again but hopefully when the sun is shining. The girls have played & played & played and formed a lasting bond – there will be tears when we say goodbye. Have done lots of exploring whilst we have been here, Medoc is beautiful, catch the ferry from Blyth – but be careful of times and if a visit to a well known chateau is wished – book first (it’s a must). Cognac is good too, a visit to the Hennessy headquarters is very interesting. The aquarium in La Rochelle is worth a visit and great for a lovely meal. Ile de Ré is a must. Nicky and Paul are great hosts & good friends we shall visit again one day, especially for the copious amount of wine we have consumer!!! Hopefully when all the gites are ready, ALL the Tuesday group families can come over – that would be fun!!! Thank you Nicki, Paul, Georgina and Claudia for everything – here’s to the next time Best wishes Karen, Chris & Caitlin (Warwickshire) Rebooked for August 2007 24th April – 4th
May 2006 Dear Paul, Nicola, Georgina and Claudia We came for a rest and we got it, what a lovely place. With the sunshine we’ve had over the last couple of days it was probably was warm enough for the pool. We were just scarey cats. Ile de Ré was good although a lunchtime meal by the marina was expensive. Probably packed when the French are on holiday. We went on back roads through forest areas and came across lots of large birds of prey – spectacular when close up. Back roads to Surgeres probably most productive for that – still plenty of forest but not so close to the road. Take binos! Intermarche with petrol station at Beavoir is good value and has nice eat and drinks. We wish you well for the future and your hard work will pay off. Matthew and Lyn Harvey (Lincolnshire)
8th – 22nd April
2006 Dear Paul, Nicola, Georgina & Claudia (not forgetting zinzi) We have had a wonderful 2 weeks. We have done and seen so much and could have done so much more. Thank you for your help and hospitality and your local knowledge. We all fell in love with the area and will be back at some time. Definitely go to Ile de Ré to see the donkeys wearing callots, very funny. Also it is worth going to the Aquarium in La Rochelle, also a visit to Cognac. Shame it was too cold for the pool, maybe next time. Think maybe we should have got more wine! Thank you, love Simon, Tracy, Jessica and James Matts (Mid Glamoragn) Thank you, the holiday was fab. November 2005 We have stayed for 3 months during late summer and autumn at L’Athena and have been very happy here. It’s an ideal place to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet, but there are so many places of interest nearby that we’ve been spoilt for choice. We’re sure that everyone will find the gite well-equipped, the private garden is a real pleasure to sit out in – and we loved the wonderful pool and communal seating area! The Allington family gave us such a warm welcome when we first arrived and have remained helpful and friendly throughout our stay. They have done everything possible to ensure that we have had a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Pam & Pete Djordjevic (now living in France)
20th August – 3rd
September 2005 Paul, Nicky, Georgina & Claudia Thank you for being such super hosts! Our holiday has been fantastic. We haven’t really seen or done very much as our stay with you has been so welcoming & relaxing, we have found it difficult to leave! The pool is fab and has given us endless hours of fun and honestly feels like a bath, so warm. The gite is very comfortable, a credit to you both for all your hard work – just hurry up and finish gite no.2 so we can bring our extended family with us next time – no pressure guys !!! Ours girls have said that this is the best holiday they have had and we tend to agree, we feel we have made new friends and look forward to coming back. Ile de Ré is worth a visit, absolutely beautiful and if you want a relaxing stroll, St Jean D’Angely is worth a trip. If you have small children, head for the lake to feed the ducks & play in the play area. Anyway, Paul & Nicky keep up with the petanque and we will visit you for a rematch! A bientot Wayne, Zoe, Skye and Pops (Cambridgeshire) Rebooked for April 2006 6th – 20th
August 2005 We have had a wonderful holiday! The gite is very comfortable and has everything you need. The swimming pool is fantastic – hours of fun and relaxation. We would recommend a visit to Dune du Pyla – it is well worth the 3 hr drive. It’s hard work climbing back up the Dune to the top again – so be warned !!! Paul, Nicky & the girls are wonderful hosts and have been very helpful and kind – we wish you all the best for the future. Best wishes Tracy, Tubbs, Tasha & Chris (Luton) 30th July – 6th
August 2005 What a lovely gite! Thank you for all your help and being such relaxing hosts. The pool is worth it’s weight in gold – a real destresser. We would recommend a trip to Saintes – the ampitheatre is worth finding. Thank you again for all your help. Mike, Jill, Joe and Olly Roughton (Halifax) I have really enjoyed staying in this gite. The pool was excellent, it’s one of the most brilliant of all brilliant pools I’ve been in. I couldn’t get out of it! Olly Roughton 16th – 30th July
2005 To Paul, Nicky, Georgina and Claudia Thank you ever so much for being such a wonderful family to stay with. The holiday was fab and the gite is beautiful. Thank you for the guidance to all the great places we visited, I enjoyed everyday and especially having the girls to play with. You have been really great friends and I hope I speak or see you again soon. I would recommend anybody to come and stay at your gites and visit Ile de Ré, Cognac, Saintes, St Jean D’Angely, Coulon (the gondolas) and Niort. I will never forget you or the stay with you (and cinema night was fab Nicky!) I will miss you all soooo much. Lots of love, hugs and kisses from Alex Jones To Paul and Nicky and not forgetting my babs Claudia and Georgina. I can’t really match up to what Alex said but I agree with every single thing she says. I really hope we speak to each other, maybe even see each other soon. I will miss this beautiful gite, your beauftil girls & of course your warm friendliness. Cinema night was fab, fab, fab even though Alex thrashed me and Nicky!!! If anyone asks for a place to stay in france you’re the people I will recommend!! I can’t say any recommendations for going because I can’t spell them so all I can say is ‘go everywhere, it’s beautiful’ Georgina and Claudia, you 2 are the greatest friends, grow up to be big & beautiful. Love you both xxx Olivia Jones Thankx again Allingtons! Ps. Pool FAB!

4. Chateau Dampierre - lovely
5. Donkey Sanctuary
6. Chatellion Plage - Lovely, huge beach, nice cafes.
7. Swimming pool - at the end of the day after the beach-lovely!

Again, what can we say?? Your hospitality has been tremendous, very accommodating and nothing was a problem to you. Last year we had a great holiday, this year has been even better ( even the pool was up to temperature - for a few days!).
Went back to La Rochelle, Ile de Ré and the beach at Fouras. This year we went to Zoodysee, donkey breeding sanctuary, further a field to La Vallee de Singes and the beach at La Tranche Sur Mer.
The kids (& dad) will miss their nightly football match with the girls (&Paul), Sean & Lisa just loved playing with Georgina & Claudia.
Last year we stayed in L'Athena, this year Les Tournesols, hopefully next year The Wheatfields. Paul & Nicky enjoy a long and relaxing summer, you deserve it after all your hard work and effort you have put it.
See you next year (hopefully/maybe)

31st May - 9th June 2008
Dear Nicky, Paul, Georgina & Claudia
Absolutely fabulous welcome, we were made to feel very comfortable, thank you.
We enjoyed the pool - or Harriet certainly did. Can we just note that Harriet was the 1st in the pool in 2008!!! With Nick being the 1st Daddy ..... mad fools!!
We enjoyed visiting a number of places which others have mentioned before. The Aquarium in La Rochelle was particularly good especially for our 2 3/4 year old, followed by a hearty meal of moules and frites washed down by a Grande Beer in the Old Town - excellent way to spend an afternoon.
For a very big beach visit the beach in South Royan, very good for our little one who could run for miles or just make hundreds of sand angels.
We know Harriet will miss Georgina and Claudia. The number of mornings waking up to 'where are the girls' and repetition of such until she saw them. Girls: thank you for playing with Harriet and taking care of her and letting her play on your trampoline etc etc etc.
It would be lovely to return one day to see how things have progressed.
Thank you all once again for a very enjoyable holiday. Wish we could stay longer with the lovely weather.

Hi to all |
11th - 18th August 2007
Dear Nicky, Paul, Georgina & Claudia
Thank you so much for your very warm welcome. After a couple of very hectic days at Euro Disney it was lovely to come to the gite and do absolutely nothing!! Stuart and I have never felt this relaxed and could have done with another week! Maybe next time. Ellie & Liam have had a fantastic time playing with Georgina & Claudia and neither wants to go home. The pool has been fantastic and even on the not so sunny days we couldn't keep Ellie out of it!! We will especially remember our night of meteor watching with the little ones camped out on their beds watching the shooting stars. Hope to be back next year.

Dear Nicky, Paul, Georgina & Claudia
Thank you for the fantastic time you have given us during our great trip to france. The gite was fab and so was the refreshing pool. I have some special memories to take home: the BBQ nights, having great days around the pool and camping out at night! I would also like to thank Georgina and Claudia for playing with us during our time at the gite, you must have a great time meeting new friends every week or so! I hope to see you all again soon! miss you all. George (Aged 11yrs)

Dear Nicky, Paul, Georgina & Claudia
Thank you for a fab holiday. This was our second time in your gite and it was better than the first time. All seven of us have had a great, relaxing time. Our highlights inlcude: Futuroscope which for teenagers was brilliant (though we only saw about half the park in one day), canoeing down the river at Jarnac was great fun and social nights at Mouton Noir and Aulnay will always be happy memories. We will miss you all and do hope to return again one day.
Regards

Dear Nicky, Paul, Georgina & Claudia
Thanks for one of the best hols I've ever had, and thanks Georgina and Claudia for letting me and Georgie & Kat play with you. Remember all the rap songs we made about your names. I love the St Jean Angely beach and I've had a great time in France. I will miss you all.

We have had a truly wonderful stay. Our gite was perfect and our back garden view of giant sunflowers just amazing!
Thank you for everything and for all your help and friendship. It was lovely getting to know you and for Patrick to be so happy in the garden each day. As we continue our trip through France we will think fondly of the Allingtons and of Villenouvelle.

Thank you for a lovely week. We’re all thoroughly enjoyed our visit here and all felt very comfortable and welcomed. Ben has loved playing here at the gite with the girls, and need I say it – the tractors!
Area is just lovely, especially enjoyed La Rochelle Towers & aquarium. Beaches at Fouras and Chize zoo.
Thanks again

2007
What a welcome!
It was wonderful to finally get over here and see you all & sample the hospitality.
The gite was clean, spacious and well equipped & if we needed anything, we only had to ask.
We really enjoyed our trip to ‘Atlantys’ in St Jean – perfect for kids of all ages. Our 2 year old could have happily spent a ½ day there. Men be warned – you have to wear “speedo” style shorts. The park next door is a good place to use up any remaining energy.
The zoo at Royan was great – but allow a good 1 ¼ hrs to get there. Be aware that the loos are holes in the ground & the food on sale all comes from the microwave – so you might want to take a picnic. Alternatively go to the coast (another 5 mins down the road) & there are several snack bars at the resort centre. Beautiful wide sandy beach with warm water in the shallows.
The aquarium at La Rochelle is wonderful & child friendly.
We also enjoyed a trip to Marais Poitevin & took Nicky & Paul’s recommendation, parking at Coulon. Lots of nice eating places & a little tourist train that goes from the town square. Rochfort is a lovely town to wander around, with nice shops & eating places.
Many thanks for everything – we hope to be back!

Thanks a million for a wonderful holiday. So relaxing, great facilities for families and a warm welcome. Nothing was too much trouble. We loved Chatellion Plage, St Martin de Ré (Ile de Ré), the Roman amphitheatre at Saintes (get an audio guide – they’re great), La Rochelle and the Hennessy distillery at Cognac. You’re super people & we appreciate all your kindness.

Our holiday is coming to an end and we we would love to stay longer. We have enjoyed our time relaxing here. The sunsets have been wonderful along with the star gazing at night with a nice glass of red wine in one's hand.
The BBQ Paul & Nicki arranged was wonderful and gave us the opportunity to meet James a Gerry and the kids (our neighbours for the next 2 weeks). The kids loved playing with their new friends and the pool and gardens.
Thanks for Nicki and Paul for the advice on where to go and the odd phone call to book places. We recommend the restaurant at the fishing river 'Migre'. The kids loved the aquarium at La Rochelle and we liked the ports of Ile de Ré (Ars en Ré, La Flotte & St Martin) plus La Rochelle itself.
We loved the beach at Chattellaillon plage and 'Le Grand Blue' restaurant which you can access direct from the beach.
FANTASTIC

Thank you again for a great holiday, after 4 years coming here the sun actually shone all fortnight. Now we are convinced the pool is like a bath.
Didn't really go anywhere apart from going to the pool - far too hot to go sightseeing (35°). Did manage to go to Puy du Fou which was great but recommend going on a cooler/overcast day. Also had great fun decorating the christmas tree!!!
Thanks again for your hospitality - see you again next year ....

Thank you for a wonderful holiday. You are a great family who provide a really welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. The gites have everything and the pool is lovely. You have done a really good job with the gites and I will certainly be recommending them to friends and family when I get home. Hopefully we will be back to explore this wonderful region again.
We recommend the following:
- Le Repos des Hiboux!! - La Rochelle
- Fouras - Rochefort - Ile D'Oléron
- Royan - Saintes - St Jean D'Angely
and many smaller towns/villages (too many to mention)
Brian, Susan, Margaret, Rob & Charlotte (South Yorkshire)
29th May - 5th June 2010
Dear Nicky, Paul, Georgina and Claudia
Thank you for letting us stay and thank you for the eggs aswell. We loved the zoo at La Palmyre but we still feel sorry for the mad polar bear and the mad leopard. The pool was heavenly but only in a wetsuit. The aquarium in La Rochelle was quite good but Grace didn't like the tunnel of jellyfish. We thought the model museum was amazing, our favourite model was daddy ..... We also liked the boat trip and we saw a Kingfisher! We loved the weather from Wednesday onwards.
From Louise, Wilf, Grace & Jack (Rothwell family, Kent)
Note from Nicki: Having heated the pool prior to their arrival, we then had a week of horrible cold, rainy weather which significantly reduced the heat in the pool .... Sorry, we can't control the weather but I am glad you still enjoyed your holiday!!
8th May - 15th 2010
Dear Nicky and Paul
Despite the rather bad weather we had a wonderful time at your gite. The gite was very good. Lots of space, a privtae garden, good beds and well equipped. The kids and we would have wanted also to try the pool, but we think we have to come back to do so! We've never been in this part of France before and we made some nice trips to La Rochelle, Cognac and Saintes. We also went for a visit to Futuroscope which has some new attractions and a beautiful spectacle in the evening. The small zoo at Chize (zoodysee) is very nice but make sure you take the ride with the carriage - our children loved it. The swimming pool at St Jean D'Angely was a good alternative for your swimming pool. On monday you can go for a long time and there were very few people.
Thank you for your kind welcome and hospitality. We will recommend your gite and we will also come back ourselves.

27th March - 2nd April 2010
The Weather wasn't so nice as we had expected but great we could use the wood stove to warm the house! And great there was so much space in the big house. The zoo at Chize was very nice and we, or at least 4 of us, dived for a short moment in the sea at La Rochelle.
Wish you all a good time.

Once again a lovely time had by all. Thank you for all you have done for us. Did the aquarium at La Rochelle again - but went late in the day and was busy, best to go early. Surgeres is a lovely place, so is Rochefort - the kids enjoyed 'The Museum' (1900 century shops etc). Will surely be back

Rebooked for August 2010 for the third year running!
1st - 15th August 2009
Thank you Nicky & Paul for a wonderful, restful holiday in your beautiful gite. You've done an amazing job on the Wheatfields and we've totally fallen in love with it. The holiday has been great for us with two small children (2 & 3yrs) - the set up is ideal for them to play outside and have lots of fun with the other children, while easy for us to relax and keep watch at the same time! A big thank you to Georgina & Claudia for helping to keep them entertained!
We all loved your saturday BBQs! They're a lovely idea and a great way of helping everyone get to know each other. Again for us with small children, it also felt like we able to have "a night out", even if we were just outside the house!
We also really enjoyed exploring the area. The valley of the monkeys was fantastic, as was Puy du Fou, if you can face the long drive. For a closer day out though, we were very impressed with the "small" zoo at Chize, which really isn't that small at all!
All in all, this has been a perfect holiday.
We'd certainly recommend the gites to anyone and who knows, maybe we'll be back one day!
Thanks again

25th July - 1st August 2009
Thanks for a fantastic first week of our 2009 holiday! We love the gite and the pool - I think we used it pretty much everyday!
We have loved having the television to watch our DVDs and the garden to eat our breakfast and dinner! One facility we really enjoyed was the use of the big bath towels - a luxury not given to us on past holidays!
Here are a couple of our favourite beaches which we would recommend to anyone:
|
Chatelaillon plage (warm & relaxing, although the sea can be muddy - great fun!) | |
|
We totally recommend Ile D'Oleron for its fantastic waves - perfect for body boarding! |
Lastly, we thoroughly enjoyed the fireworks at St Palais sur Mer - we loved the Micheal Jackson finale! Ha Ha
Thanks again.

Thanks again for a great holiday.
Third time lucky with the weather, believe you now how warm the pool can be.
Not done much sightseeing this time just enjoyed the beaches at La Tranche Sur Mer (long drive), Chatelaillon Plage and old favourite Fouras. Rest of our time was relaxing by and watching Lisa in the pool.
Gite comfortable with nearly everything we need except the 7 foot high washing line!!
See you soon (maybe).

6th - 20th June 2009
Thank you for a lovely holiday, I can't believe how quickly the last 2 weeks have gone. Matthew & Katie have thoroughly enjoyed playing with the garden toys and we've all enjoyed the pool. Having a little garden to ourselves is great too. For days out, would definately recommend the zoo at La Palmyre and the Aquarium as well as the beach at Fouras. A good baby & toddler friendly restaurant is La Croisette at Fouras and they have a microwave for customers to use to heat baby food. There is also a little pizzeria in Loulay that does delicious takeaway pizzas.
Hope to come back again soon.

Thanks Nicola and Paul for a lovely week of R & R in your gite. After much work on our own house in the Limousin we were looking for a complete break and this week has been 'just what the doctor ordered'. Can't believe it's passed so quickly!
We have been warm and cosy, just like home from home. The warmth of the house only exceeded by the warmth of the welcome which has really made a difference.
Lots of interesting places to visit thanks to your big red book. This has been our first stay with you but we hope not the last!
Mavis & Emlyn Dykes (Limousin, France)
25th October - 1st November 2008
Thank you all for yet another wonderful week in your lovely gites. We have really enjoyed ourselves and really don't want to go home!
The log burning fire's a real treat and provided Chris & Paul with a little challenge of who can keep best fires overnight - so competitive!
We loved the Halloween Party and appreciate the efforts you went to for the children, but you didn't have to dye your hair green!!
We've stayed in all 3 gites now and love them all and happily recommend them to anyone, but only after we've already booked!!!
